What if my winch freespool does not engage?
This could be caused by several problems. The most likely cause is debris in the piston. This can be cured by removing the drum and then the piston from the drum. Clean the inside of the drum and if required use a die grinder or dremel to remove high spots on the engagement sockets. Take care not to damage the side walls as these need to be polished so the ‘o’rings on the piston seal.
It is also possible that the ‘o’rings have been damaged, remove drum check and replace as required. The engagement spring has broken or been damaged. Remove the brake assembly then remove the piston access cover, check spring and replace as required.
My winch new freespool solenoids keeps leaking air?
This could be caused by the incorrect fitting of the air solenoid, This can be fixed by removing the solenoid and fitting it the opposite way round.
My winch freespool solenoid is constantly leaking air?
The solenoid could have debris in the exhaust, remove and clean solenoid as required.
When I engage my freespool my compressor keeps running?
This could be caused by several things. For quick diagnosis clamp the air pipe near the compressor. If the compressor continues to run when the pipe is clamped then the problem is likely to be the air solenoid, this can be checked by replacing the unit.
If the compressor stops running you know that the problem is at the winch or the pipe is leaking. The problem could be a damaged or dirty air connector on the winch, check and replace as required. The problem could also be damaged or old ‘O’ rings on the piston, remove the winch drum and check and replace as required.
When I operate the winch the winch starts slowly and gets quicker?
This could be caused by a seized or partially seized bearing on the free end of the winch, to cure remove bearing and examine and replace as required.
The other reason is you could have an inoperative motor or contactor (solenoid). The easy test is to disconnect one motor or solenoid and see if the winch works. If you see no change, then reconnect and disconnect the other motor and contactor and test again. Replace the damaged motor or contactor as required.
When I operate the winch i get sparks from the motors?
The usual cause of this is poor connections, Bad earth (ground) or damaged motors. Firstly check for loose or dirty connections, clean and tighten as required. Check to make sure all your earth connections are clean and tight. It is also very important the earth connection runs from the motor direct to the battery, if not then rectify as required.
If none of the above check he motor very carefully for signs of overheating around the terminal coonections if he insulator blocks are melted or damaged replace the moor as the internal will be more than likely fried.
My Warn 8274 has lost drive but the motor runs?
This could be a damaged motor pinion gear. Remove the freespool mechanism, withdraw and check the gear. Replace as required. The problem could also be caused by the bearings in the intermediate gear (single motor top housing only) collapsing so that the gears do not mesh. Replace gear with Gigglepin up rated version or if gear is reusable use a set Gigglepin replacement bearings that will stop the problem reoccurring.
My winch brake does not work on my 8274?
The problem is likely to be caused by two things.
Firstly check that the pawl mechanism is working correctly and that the spring is undamaged if damaged or not working correctly rebuild or replace as required. If this is all ok, strip the brake and check to make sure the brake linings are ok, if not replace as required.
If all this seems ok, strip the winch and check the condition of the mainshaft and mainshaft cam gears. Check the gears to make sure they are not damaged or broken, replace as required. Check to make sure that the large cam turns freely on the mainshaft, if not clean as required.
The end plates on my 8274 winch drum are bent and touching the casings?
This can be caused by fairleads that are excessively worn or to wide. And/or the use of ropes that are two big in diameter. We recommend using no more than 12mm rope and we recommend 11mm for almost all applications for 8274 or GP winches. To repair, remove the winch drum and straighten end plates taking care not to fracture them.
